The program is nearly over and I have to say I am so proud of this year's Summer Leadership Cohort. The young people in this program are all filled with determination, ambition and talent. It's a breath of fresh air. I watch from the sideline, like a proud athtletic coach, filled with pride as these young people enter the seventh week of the eight week program. The amount of growth they have under-gone in this limited amount of time is outstanding. But there is more growing and dreaming to do.
We have phased out of the classroom sessions and are now moving into final group and
individual projects. The final group project is an "Apprentice" style competition. The 8 participants are broke into two teams and they are tasked with coming up with a plan to fix some of the main issues impacting young black males in Milwaukee. Each SLC member is also tasked with developing a media project around their 3 to 5 year personal plan.
One of my favorite aspects of SLC has been the participant's
attitudes. Unlike so many people that have given up on the next generation, they believe in themseleves and in the future I see them continuing to push their boundaries and continuing to seek excellence in the classroom and in the workplace. I am more than satisfied with the group of people that were chosen to participate in this year's cohort. These young people have a lot to offer, Milwaukee, America and the world and I can't wait to see how they solve their community's problems.
